In a world where we don’t believe in boxing ourselves into just one thing, Solani catches up with Sammy, a paralegal by day and DJ by night, to find out how she balances two different worlds and what the journey has been like venturing beyond one label.
Sammy explains that her love for music is nothing new. Since childhood, music has always had a big presence in her life. But in 2022, when she started going out more to day parties, something shifted. “I was really fascinated by the DJs and the way they mixed songs,” she says. Her natural love for music sparked a curiosity to explore DJing herself. The combination of that love and curiosity led her to buy her first deck, practicing at home as a way to escape the stresses of being a paralegal. What started as a fun hobby soon became something more.
Sammy: I’ve been a bedroom DJ for over a year and a half. So it’s actually been a long time coming, she shares.
Solani: What’s a bedroom DJ?
Sammy: A bedroom DJ is someone who can DJ but just does it in their room for themselves. So I’ve literally been having my own parties in my room for a year and a half, hahah.
Solani: What has been the toughest thing about stepping into being a DJ while working as a paralegal?
Sammy: I think the hardest part has been the confidence, just doing what I like and what I want without overthinking it.
As she steps further into the scene, she’s learning to trust her instincts, balance her personal style with crowd expectations, and stay true to her love for music. With aspirations of putting out her own mixes, hosting events, and traveling the world with her sound, DJ Sammy is just getting started.
